What to Do When Your Computer Won't Turn On
Don't Panic — It's Usually Something Simple
A computer that won't power on is alarming, but in most cases it's not a dead machine. It's a loose cable, a drained battery, or a stuck power button. Start with the basics and work your way up.
Check 1: Is It Plugged In?
It sounds obvious, but check that the power cable is firmly plugged in at both ends — the wall outlet and the back of the computer. Try a different outlet to rule out a tripped breaker. If you're using a power bar, make sure it's switched on.
Check 2: For Laptops — Check the Battery
If you're on a laptop, plug it into the charger and wait 5 minutes before trying to turn it on. A fully drained battery may need a brief charge before it will respond. Also check that the charger cable and adapter are undamaged.
Check 3: Hold the Power Button
Sometimes a computer gets stuck mid-shutdown. Hold the power button down for 10 full seconds to force it off, release it, then press it once normally to start fresh. This fixes more problems than you'd expect.
Check 4: Check the Monitor (Desktop Users)
If your desktop tower is running — you can hear fans or see lights — but nothing appears on screen, the problem may be your monitor, not the computer. Make sure the monitor is turned on, plugged in, and connected to the correct input (e.g., HDMI). Try pressing the monitor's 'Source' or 'Input' button.
Check 5: Look for Warning Lights or Beeps
Some computers show flashing lights or make beeping sounds when something is wrong. Count the number of beeps or note the colour of any flashing lights — these are diagnostic codes that a technician can use to identify the problem quickly.
When to Call for Help
If none of the above steps work, there may be a hardware issue such as a failed power supply, a dead battery, or a motherboard problem. At that point, it's worth having a technician take a look before spending money on a new machine. Alex Tech Solutions serves the Belleville area and can diagnose the issue quickly.
