Is Your Home Wi-Fi Actually Secure?

Most home routers are still running the factory password. Here’s how to check — and fix it in minutes.

Signs your Wi-Fi is at risk

  • You’ve never changed the router password

  • Your network name still includes the brand (e.g. “Rogers-1234”)

  • You don’t know what WPA2 or WPA3 means

Quick fixes

  • Log into your router (usually 192.168.1.1 in your browser)

  • Change the admin password — not the Wi-Fi password, the router login

  • Change your Wi-Fi name to something that doesn’t include your ISP or address

  • Set encryption to WPA2 or WPA3

  • Create a separate Guest network for visitors and smart home devices
