Should You Get Mesh Wi-Fi? + How to Set It Up

When mesh makes sense: Larger homes, dead zones, or multiple floors where a single router can’t cover everything.

Decide (2 checks)

  1. Coverage check: If moving your router to a central, elevated spot still leaves weak rooms, mesh is a good fit. FCC Documents

  2. Device load: Many gadgets in one area? Mesh spreads the load across nodes for steadier speeds. (Apple also recommends minimizing extra SSIDs for air-time efficiency.) Apple Support

Setup steps (most brands)

  1. Place main router centrally and off the floor; avoid thick walls/metal. FCC Documents

  2. Add nodes 1–2 rooms (or one floor) away from the main unit; keep line-of-sight if possible. Apple Support

  3. Use one network name (SSID) for all bands to enable seamless roaming. Apple Support

  4. Update firmware in the app after install.

Why this helps: Good placement + a single SSID = fewer drop-offs and smoother roaming.
